What’s really leading the narrative here is Nilsen himself, however. Memories of a Murderer presents this repulsive material through interviews with responding officers, members of the press who covered the emerging story, a varied collection of news reports and archival footage of 1980’s Britain, and the recollections of those Nilsen left behind, the men who escaped his clutches as well as the victims’ loved ones. Nilsen was arrested in 1983 when human remains were discovered in the drains of his London flat, and in time he spilled the entire gruesome tale to the police: that he had lured young men to his home with the promise of drink, conversation, and comfort, only to strangle them and dispose of their bodies, whether by putting them under the floorboards or burning corpses in his garden that he would spread talcum powder over their bodies and his own in a horrible replication of death as a communion with love. With this sinister introduction, Memories of a Murderer introduces us to the man on the tape, a Scot who led a seemingly humdrum existence as an employment office worker bee until the revelation of his shocking crimes. “Well,” the voice continues, “we’ve all gotta die of something, haven’t we?”

The archive is said to include over 250 hours of Nilsen talking about his life from his childhood to the methods behind his killings as an adult.Netflix adds another documentary to its teeming true crime catalog with Memories of a Murderer: The Nilsen Tapes. Harte was given access to the recordings found in a personal archive left in Nilsen’s cell after his passing. Other interviewees include officers and journalists who were involved with the original case.
Memories of a Murderer will also include interviews with family members of his victims and even survivors of Nilsen’s acts. The tapes dive deep into Nilsen’s twisted life and mind as he recalls how he was able to commit each violent crime and sweep himself under the radar for years. The audio was recorded on cassette tapes while Nilsen sat in prison. The documentary film is directed by Michael Harte and includes real recordings of Nilsen himself, which have never been publicly released until now. Nilsen was given a life sentence and died on at the age of 72.
Since Nilsen did not recall all of his victim’s names, the police were only able to arrest him for the murders of victims with confirmed identities. He would then resort to drowning his unconscious victims in his bath or sink.Īfter being arrested, Nilsen willingly told the police that he had rotting corpses in his home and claimed to have killed 15 or 16 men since 1978. Once inside, Nilsen would strangle his victims until they died or became unconscious. He would lure his victims into his home with the promise of alcohol and/or shelter. Nilsen’s infamous killing spree occurred between 19 while he lived in North London.
As one of Britain’s most notorious serial killers, Nilsen is responsible for the confirmed death of 12 victims (all men or young boys) and the attempted murder of several others. Netflix’s latest documentary, Memories of a Murderer: The Nilsen Tapes, follows the true and horrific story of Dennis Nilsen.
